Chasing Asylum: Screening and Q&A

Chasing Asylum exposes the real impact of Australia’s offshore detention policies and explores how ‘The Lucky Country’ became a country where leaders choose detention over compassion and governments deprive the desperate of their basic human rights.

The film features never-before-seen footage from inside Australia’s offshore detention camps, revealing the personal impact of sending those in search of a safe home to languish in limbo. Chasing Asylum explores the mental, physical and fiscal consequences of Australia’s decision to lock away families in unsanitary conditions hidden from media scrutiny, destroying their lives under the pretext of saving them.

A screening of this new documentary from Oscar-winning filmmaker Eva Orner will be followed by a Q&A with her. The film will be introduced by Melbourne barrister and human-rights advocate Julian Burnside AO QC, and will be followed by a conversation between Burnside and Orner. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of both.

Thank You for Playing: Screening and Q&A

When Ryan, a video game designer, learns that his young son Joel has cancer, he and his wife begin documenting their emotional journey in the form of an unusual and poetic video game. The result is a game called That Dragon, Cancer – an astoundingly honest and innovative work of art about the universal complexity of grief. Thank You for Playing follows Ryan and his family over two years, offering an intimate, revolutionary glimpse into how the fusion of art and technology – in this case, a video game – can document profound human experiences in the modern age.

This will be a screening of the documentary followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers: David Osit and Malika Zouhali-Worrall.

Delegates will also be invited to play the game That Dragon, Cancer at the summit.
